Sebastian Menzke
Rising Stars Residency Artist 2024
Drawing / Thinking
Painting / Seeing
August 17, 2024 – January 6, 2025
As part of the residency program at the Till Richter Museum, Sebastian Menzke (*1978 in Neubrandenburg, lives and works in Berlin) showcased and further developed his latest works. Originally trained in glass design and product design, Menzke later turned to painting and the conceptual reflection of artistic processes.
His work is characterized by a captivating interplay between drawing and painting. While drawing serves as a means of conceptual thinking, painting acts as a catalyst for new ways of seeing. The resulting pieces oscillate between full abstraction and reduced abstraction, always retaining hints of their figurative origins.
A particular highlight of the residency was the inclusion of three light paintings, created in collaboration with lighting designer and architect Rob Schulz. These works seamlessly blend analog painting with Rob Schulz’s precise digital light programming, resulting in dynamic, ever-changing artworks. The light paintings were exhibited alongside Menzke’s traditional works, offering a fascinating contrast and highlighting the innovative fusion of static and dynamic elements.
The residency not only allowed Menzke to deepen his artistic style but also provided an opportunity to work on new projects that further developed his unique aesthetic. His works balance vibrant color palettes with playful elegance, never veering into flatness or decoration—a hallmark that gained him special recognition at the Till Richter Museum.
This residency marked an important milestone in Sebastian Menzke’s artistic journey, demonstrating once again how art can be both profoundly thought-provoking and visually captivating.
Capturing the Ever-Changing Dynamic
Together with our good friend Thomas Eirich-Schneider, we set out to find a way to capture the constant transformation and unique dynamism of our light paintings on video. The challenge was to translate the interplay of analog painting and digital light into a medium that reflects its true depth and movement.
After an inspiring day of shooting, we are excited to share the first cut of the video—a glimpse into how our artworks come alive through light and change. This collaboration was an incredible opportunity to explore new ways of presenting our art, and we can’t wait to refine it further.
Stay tuned for more updates as we bring this visual journey to life! 🎥✨
Behind the Scenes – A Day in Motion
Here’s a little timelapse from our behind-the-scenes shoot with Thomas Eirich-Schneider, capturing the energy and creativity of the day. From setting up the lights to experimenting with camera angles, it was all about finding the perfect way to showcase the dynamic nature of our light paintings.
It’s always exciting to see the process unfold in fast motion—proof that collaboration and a bit of chaos can lead to something truly special. More to come soon! 🎥✨
